William Grant Waugh was born in Sunderland in March 1922 and was killed in action in the spring of 1945. He played on the wing for the club in 1939 and 1940 when still at school and college. His father was a surgeon at Monkwearmouth Hospital and William was educated at Fettes College and Worcester College, Oxford. The family lived in Grange Terrace in the former home of Howard Marshall – Sunderland, Blackheath, England, Barbarians and British Lion back. William’s mother was the sister of Sunderland sporting legend Charles Pickersgill. At school William was in the junior OTC and was in the Home Guard until he was able to join up in the army at the age of 18 in June 1940. He moved from lieutenant to temporary captain in the 10th Hussars and was wounded in the Battle of El Alamein in 1942. He was still with the Hussars in the spring of 1945 when his tank was knocked out by a shell from a German propellor gun during the fighting around Ravenna in Italy. His body was buried there. The regimental museum has some sketches he did of fellow officers.

Google William Grant Waugh for more  and Facebook for  a link to the sketches.
