Leslie Scorer was born in Sunderland on 18 April 1919. He played scrum half for the club and also JTS Old Boys just before the war. His father, John Scorer, was a motor driver and Leslie was working as a hardware salesman after leaving Sunderland Junior Tech. The family lived in Cecil Street. He joined the RAF in 1939 and was stationed in Northern Ireland at some point where he met his future wife – a WAAF. They married in 1943. By then he was an instructor having carried out his award-winning activities. As a squadron leader in the RAF, he  was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross for brave sorties when part of Brendan ‘Paddy’ Finucane’s renowned 602 squadron. One  of his sorties in 1942 involved an attack on enemy ships. It was filmed and is now part of the Imperial War Museum’s archives. In all Leslie carried out more than 70 sorties over Northern France. As yet, nothing of certainty has, as yet been discovered about his life post war.

‘Brendan Finucane’ ‘Leslie Scorer’ in Google makes for interesting reading – also ‘602 squadron’
