Remembering Former Rugby Players

As the annual Remembrance Day approaches, we look at the careers of some of the club's rugby players during the Second World War. SRFC's history formed part of a book published in the 1960s. In the book was a Roll Of Honour dedicated to over 60 members of the then Sunderland Cricket and Rugby Football Club who gave their lives or were decorated for bravery during that conflict. Daily from Tuesday 20 October I hope to publish on this site mini biographies of 23 of the club's rugby players who took part in the conflict. Today they might have formed a modern squad of 15 starters and 8 finishers. It should be of particular interest to modern club players of all ages to discover what happened to the player(s) who played in their position(s)! Attached to this advanced notice is a photograph of the County Cup winning 1st XV of 1931. Six of those pictured are named in the Roll of Honour. We also hope to provide those club members who are interested with an updated leaflet covering the players on a similar Roll of Honour for the First World War.
