Alan Hughes is known to many at the club - as supporter, former player and official but how many are aware of his current role as time keeper? In fact he was time keeper for the recent England v Italy game at Twickenham. I have seen him carrying out this role at Falcons home games but was unaware of his international activities and only recently discovered that these activities are quite extensive. He performed the same role in the England v Italy match two years ago and has been an official in games between England and South Africa and England and the Barbarians. He has also refereed an England warm up match prior to a tour of Canada and acted as assistant referee for an international between Italy and Japan. He has even refereed Sunderland in a County Cup final! Alan is just one of a number of Ashbrooke officials who have played significant roles at a high level in the game and you can find their stories elsewhere on this site'.

Pic is of Alan (in white on the left) with a Sunderland 1st XV at a festival at Ryton some years ago.
